Free Learning For Your Student Online

With school out, summer is a great time to do some extra studying to get ready for next year. The Internet is full of web sites offering free math, science and language help. There are also sites that offer free practice tests and study tips for standard exams like the SAT. These web sites aren’t just for children! Everyone could stand to brush up on his or her math skills. Or you could decide that this is the year you finally learn to speak Italian. Some of the top educational web sites are listed below.

Math

  1. Math.com – This web site offers math tables, calculators, games, and math tutorials for skill levels ranging from basic math to calculus.
  2. Onlinemathlearning.com – A very useful website for basic math through trigonometry. Statistics and matrices are also covered. This website uses YouTube videos to help explain concepts. Math games are also available. SAT/ACT test preparation is also offered.
  3. Passmathclass.com – This web site offers free online math lessons for pre-algebra, algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus.
  4. Mathslice.com – Mathslice.com focuses on strengthening basic math skills using problem sets and math games. Examples of math topics include: counting money, telling time, addition and subtraction, and fractions. This web site is best suited for younger children or people looking to brush up on their basic math skills.
  5. Sparknotes.com/math – A math site that covers topics from pre-algebra through advanced calculus. This web site would be useful for high school and college students.


English – Reading, Writing, and Spelling

  1. Rif.org – RIF stands for “Reading is Fundamental”. This web site offers fun games to help children improve their reading. There are also interviews with children’s authors and illustrators and online stories to read.
  2. Resources.kaboose.com/games/read2.html – This web site has fun reading and spelling games for children.
  3. Starfall.com – A web site for children in pre-kindergarten through second grade that introduces learning to read. This web site is full of beautiful animations; there are also audio files that teach pronunciation.
  4. Spellingcity.com – This web site is dedicated to strengthening spelling abilities. A child (or their parent) can either input a spelling list from school, or a list from the web site can be chosen. The child can then choose to be taught the spelling list or they can be tested on it. Spelling games are also offered.
  5. Gamequarium.com – Gamequarium.com is a web site devoted to educational games. One of the options is Readquarium, which contains an assortment of reading game links.


Foreign Language

  1. Bbc.co.uk/languages – A phenomenal web site for people trying to learn a foreign language. German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Greek, and Portuguese are offered. Smaller lessons are also offered for Japanese, Polish, Russian, and Urdu.
  2. Internetpolyglot.com – A web site offering a large variety of foreign language lessons. This web site is not only for English speakers. For example, Internetpolyglot.com offers tutorials for English speakers learning French, but also for French speakers learning English.
  3. A4esl.org – This web site is dedicated to learning English as a second language (ESL).
  4. Webgerman.com/languages – Webgerman.com offers a nearly exhaustive list of language resource links.
  5. Word2word.com/coursead.html – This web site offers another lengthy list of free foreign language resources.


Science

  1. Sciencebuddiess.org – A web site dedicated to helping students choose and carry out a science fair project.
  2. Fordhamprep.org/gcurran – This chemistry web site is a little rough around the edges, but it’s worth a look.
  3. Mytestbook.com – Mytestbook.com is a website for students in grades 1-5. It offers testing in math, science, and reading/grammar.
  4. Hippocampus.org – This web site is for high school and college students. Hippocampus.org states that their web site has “multimedia correlated to most major textbooks”. A student can view supplemental material that is drawn from the textbook they use in class.
  5. Ecokids.ca – Ecokids is a Canadian website designed to teach children about the environment using fun games.


Test Prep – GED, ACT, SAT, GRE, etc.

  1. Testprepreview.com – This web site offers practice modules for nearly all standardized tests, including the Home Inspector Exam and the Dietician exam. This web site isn’t just for college-bound high school students.
  2. Testprep.sparknotes.com – A web site that offers free practice exams for major college entrance exams (SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE). Advanced placement (AP) testing help is also offered.
  3. Number2.com – Number2.com offers study help for the ACT, SAT, and GRE. Registration is required to use this site.
  4. Gedforfree.com – This web site offers a free online course to help successfully pass the General Educational Development (GED) exam.
  5. Satexamprep.com – This web site is wholly devoted to preparing for the SAT.
